AHF Airlifts Emergency Aid to the Bahamas

Miami, FL - In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, which left at least 50 people dead and 1,300 missing in the Bahamas, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) chartered two planes to deliver vital donated supplies to two devastated islands.

AHF thanks those who have already donated money or resources and encourages others who can help to donate through one or more agencies listed here.

“AHF has a strong record of proactively responding to individuals and communities in need,” said AHF Southern Bureau Chief Michael Kahane. “We are deeply saddened by the recent devastation to the Bahamas—and having supported disaster relief efforts in the past, we know that the road to rebuilding is a long journey. We remain committed to working with leadership in the Bahamas to provide the critical resources that the Bahamian people need to recover from this disaster.”

The two planes delivered 15,000 pounds of supplies on September 11 and 12 to the islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco respectively, including items for children and babies, as well as materials for recovery teams to protect homes and other structures that were not completely destroyed.

AHF, which operates programs in the Caribbean, received the list of needed items through its communications with the Bahamian government and the U.S. Agency for International Development. The requested materials were gathered by AHF staff from across South Florida and deployed from Miami.

The actions supporting the Bahamas comes on the heels of similar relief efforts when AHF delivered generators to Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria and thousands of needed items to Haiti after Hurricane Matthew.
